Submission Guidelines
* NOW paying $1 per accepted story or poem! *
Pieces accepted for publication are generally published in the next two months after acceptance. For example, a story accepted in October might be published in November or December.
Submissions are open year-round EXCEPT we are closed for the month of September every year to tally the results for The Scribes Prize.
Both original stories/poems and reprints are welcome. NO AI-CREATED WORK. Simultaneous submissions are fine, but please let us know immediately if your story/poem is accepted for publication elsewhere AND you don't want us to consider it to be republished in our magazine as a reprint (since we DO accept reprints, as long as you retain the rights to your piece).
We're looking for drabbles (stories, creative nonfiction & poems of 100 words), but we're flexible - works can be between 90-110 words (excluding title). Cutoff for each month's submissions will be the last day of the month before (11:59 p.m. EST). Publication will be the 15th of every month (although sometimes we're a day or two late - hey, life happens). So, for example, if you're interested in having us publish your writing in November, submit no later than October 31st. Often, if our current issue is full, we will carry over acceptances to the following month, but we will not hold onto a piece longer than that. You'll receive either an acceptance, rejection, or rewrite request in about a month or two.
Limit 3 entries per writer at a time. Please follow William Shunn's guide to formatting stories and send all entries in .doc, .docx or .rtf format or in the body of the email to: [email protected]. In the subject line, write "Micro Submission." Include a short bio of 50 words or less and a link to your website and social media handles, if you have any – if you don't, no worries. It won't affect your chances of publication, but we like to be able to promote our writers and their work.
We will NOT open links. Repeat: NO LINKS PLEASE.
Our issues will also feature either a micro-length interview or a book review highlighting a special contributor for each month.
We pay $1 per accepted nonfiction/fiction story or poem. We can only pay via PayPal, and will ask for your PayPal information when we send out acceptances. We respond to every submission we receive. If you haven't heard back from us within two months, please feel free to query our editors as to the status of your submission - it might have been eaten by our spam folder.
By submitting your writing, you agree to our Terms and Conditions. If you're looking for more info on what we like to publish, check out our "Prologue Issue" with writing from the editors of the Fairfield Scribes or any of our published issues.
Thank you, and happy writing!
