Submissions are currently CLOSED!
We are reading stories for The Scribes Prize
during the month of September 2023.
We will REOPEN for submissions on
October 1, 2023.
Submission Guidelines
* NOW paying $1 per accepted story or poem! *
Deadline to submit is last day of the previous month. Example: submit no later than October 31 if you're interested in being published in November.
Submissions are open year-round EXCEPT we are closed for the month of September every year to tally the results for The Scribes Prize.
Both original stories/poems and reprints are welcome, although we won't publish more than a couple of reprints per issue. Simultaneous submissions are fine, but please let us know immediately if your story/poem is accepted for publication elsewhere. We're looking for drabbles (works of 100 words), but we'll be a bit flexible - works can be between 90-110 words (excluding title). Cutoff for each month's submissions will be the last day of the month before (11:59 p.m. EST). Publication will be the 15th of every month. So, for example, if you're interested in having us publish your writing in November, submit no later than October 31st. Sometimes, if our current issue is full, we might carry over acceptances to the following month.
Limit 3 entries per writer at a time - 1 in each category. We publish fiction of all genres, creative nonfiction, and poetry. Please follow William Shunn's guide to formatting stories and send all entries in .doc, .docx or .rtf format to: Scribes.Micro@gmail.com. In the subject line, write "Micro Submission." Include a short bio of 50 words or less and a link to your website and social media handles, if you have any – if you don't, no worries. It won't affect your chances of publication, but we like to be able to promote our writers and their work. Our issues will also feature either a micro-length interview or a book review highlighting a special contributor for each month.
We pay $1 per accepted nonfiction/fiction story or poem. We can only pay via PayPal, and will ask for your PayPal information when we send out acceptances. We are also starting a Patreon soon to help support the writers of our publication.
We respond to every submission we receive. If you haven't heard back from us within two months, please feel free to query our editors as to the status of your submission.
By submitting your writing, you agree to our Terms and Conditions. If you're looking for more info on what we like to publish, check out our "Prologue Issue" with writing from the editors of the Fairfield Scribes or any of our published issues.
Thank you, and happy writing!
