William Ross Earl is a 26-year-old creative writer, high school chorus and musical theatre director, vocalist, and avid hiker living in Knoxville Tennessee. His first written work came in the form of table-top role-playing games in high school. Quickly, his friends asked him to keep running sessions because playing in his stories was “just different.” A decade later, he hasn’t stopped game mastering though most of his work is now in novels and short stories.

William believes the world is at its best when inspiring us to imagine new ones, and thus, he prefers the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genres. He is currently seeking publication for several short stories and a young adult science fiction novel series.

A 2020 graduate of Maryville College, William holds a bachelor’s in music education and has been teaching and directing since. He is also a composer and arranger of choral music, two of his pieces having been performed by ensembles in East Tennessee, one becoming a yearly mainstay for the Lads located in Maryville TN. He is active in the Knoxville writing community, a current member of the East Tennessee Creative Writer’s Alliance (ETCWA).

Interview with William Ross Earl
about his story "I Am Bound"
Honorable Mention for The Scribes Prize

What inspired this piece?

“I Am Bound” came about when I first discovered the microfiction genre. I had no idea what to make my premier piece about, so I decided to focus on something in the room with me. My eyes went to the digital assistant hanging on my wall and about five minutes later, the first draft was done.

What draws you to the micro-fiction format?

Capturing a story is no easy task, and the less space you have, the greater the challenge becomes. Microfiction is writing that is exposed, vulnerable. In its simplicity, an artform entirely its own emerges.

What's next on the horizon for you?

Who can say? This being my first publication, I suppose it will begin with waving The Scribes Prize like a banner and striving for more. First come 100 words, then, hopefully millions. Only one way to find out…
