Tracy Roe is new to writing and very surprised to find herself in this august company.

She’s from New York and planned to be an actress, but that didn’t work out, so when she graduated from college (in Boston), she became a copyeditor, which was lovely, but she decided she needed a challenge, so she went to medical school (in Virginia). Then she decided she missed reading books and telling people what was wrong with them (well, she did that anyway, but for free), and now she’s an urgent-care physician who also edits. She hates exercise but loves Broadway musicals, so she watches Broadway musicals while running on her treadmill.

She has a wonderful husband and a perfect son and stepdaughter and a Balinese cat who’s not a person, as she keeps telling him (to no discernible effect).

What draws you to the micro-fiction format?

I like constraints. Tell me to go write a short story, and I’m at a loss. Tell me to go write a story that’s exactly two hundred words and includes a neon-blue cat, a Tiffany pocket watch, and the word demure, and I’m all over it.

Who are some authors that inspire you?

Stephen King, because no one draws you into a different world better than he does. And Philippa Gregory, because I love me some historical fiction. Also, in terms of inspiration, any really bad novel, because I figure whatever I come up with won't be nearly as bad as the dreck I just read.

What's next on the horizon for you?

I’d like to write a novel about a character I love doing a thing that’s really interesting, which, it turns out, is much harder than it sounds.
