WHAT'S THE WORD ON THE STREET?

"It’s harder to write a witty epigram than an apology, harder to craft an interesting postcard than a letter, and harder to tell a story well in a hundred words rather than a thousand. Here are a hundred and nine hundred-word samplings, literary amuse bouche to be tasted quickly and pleasurably."
--Edward Ahern, Coordinating Editor at Bewildering Stories, Managing Editor at Scribes*MICRO*Fiction

"Alternately devastating and heartwarming, these stories feature an intensity that belies their length. Like rich chocolate or strong espresso, each soupçon merits savoring. We step into other lives just for a moment, but that moment is profound in its revelation of the truth."
--Shawn Samuelson Henry, author of Made in Maine

"A Little Conversation by Matthews P.S. Salinas is a masterful compendium of bite-sized observations on both the real and surreal human condition. Some of the pieces are biting jokes. Some are poetic. Still others are both. If you’re not careful, you may be trapped below the ice looking at the world above. And the joke will be on you. Treat yourself to a conversation with the author and in your own head as you read along with his sardonic view of the universe--even its very existence, as the "sun began to fissure."
--Ira Rosofsky, author of Nasty, Brutish, and Long—Adventures in Eldercare

"Matthew P.S. Salinas’s collection of micro fiction, A Little Conversation, is fresh and offbeat. The stories take you on a wild ride, from laughing to gasping to feeling your heart break. Mysterious tales like "In the Pot" haunted me long after I put this book down, in the best way. "Holding Hands," a darkly romantic piece, is another favorite of mine. I highly recommend this book for someone wanting something unique that is easy to read, whether it be taken all in one sitting or digested one story at a time."
--Amy Bleu, author of In My Secret Life and Petrichor and Other Scents

“An intriguing collection of tiny stories, glimpses into the amazing, sometimes gruesome, elements of the human condition.”
--Jacqueline Masumian, author of Nobody Home: A Memoir

What inspired you to write this book?

When I think of storytelling, I can't help but think of the old tradition of sitting around a fire and communicating a story through the power of the spoken word. Drawing from this, it only made sense to me to write about what I would consider to be one of the most powerful everyday experiences everyone can relate to, that being conversations with others. Conversations are an everyday activity that hold great gravitas in our lives whether we choose to acknowledge this or not.

Why microfiction?

Microfiction is something that has long fascinated me since I first heard the story about Hemmingway's infamous "For Sale: Baby Shoes Never Worn." It amazes and continues to amaze me how much can be said in only a few words. It also really helped me improve as an author due to the emphasis on concision and importance of word choice.

What's next on the horizon?

I am currently working on the editing of a novel called A House on The Horizon. It will be my first general fiction novel based around the relationship of a peculiar family stuck repeating their past. I'm moving away from the horror genre to see what else I can do to broaden my horizons (pun intended). I'm hoping to get this novel out within the next few months and am very excited for the whole at large to see it.

"You can't try to do things; you simply must do them."
-- Ray Bradbury
