Interview with M.D. Smith IV
about his story "The Old Lamp Post"
Honorable Mention for The Scribes Prize

Picture
What inspired this piece?

Gave my class assignment to write a fiction story from the POV of an inanimate object.

What draws you to the micro-fiction format?

It’s a challenge to tell a great story in so few words.

Who are some authors that inspire you?

James Patterson, Don Keith, Nora Roberts, Danielle Steel.

If you could continue writing your story after these 100 words, what would happen next?

I’ve written several longer flash versions and one 1901-word version and what happens is there are a lot more interactions with people and children over the years, and in the end, the lamp post is torn down and replaced.

What's next on the horizon for you?

I write one or two flash fiction stories every week and plan to continue.

Do you write other genres?

Yes, I write romance, science-fiction, fantasy, mystery, horror and one of my favorites, the western—tales of the old west. Changing genres keeps me fresh and never burned out on just one style.
